Edgerton Wesleyan Church began as the Smiley, Ohio, Wesleyan Methodist Church. As far back as 1876, Bible classes were being held. The class grew and was organized as the Smiley Church, one of three churches in the Payne, Ohio, circuit.
The church was organized in 1896 and first met in a schoolhouse. The congregation moved into their own building in 1902. The church building was then actually moved to Edgerton, Indiana, in 1919 and the church was organized as the Edgerton Wesleyan Methodist Church. A year later, a cyclone destroyed the church and much of Edgerton. However, due to the courage and hard work of the people, the church was quickly rebuilt.
In 1968, the Wesleyan Methodist and the Pilgrim Holiness denominations merged, forming what is known today as The Wesleyan Church. In 1987, a new worship center was built to replace the white-frame building that the congregation had met in since 1920.
